Jessie Buckley may have been thrust into the spotlight by Hamnet’s success, but she’s keeping her relationship under wraps.
The award-winning actress is intent on keeping her personal life out of the spotlight, to the point that her husband is only known publicly by his first name, Freddie. There’s good reason for his mystique—a January 2026 British Vogue profile explained that since Buckley’s husband is a mental health worker, “his anonymity is crucial,” and they won’t be hitting the red carpet together anytime soon.
Nevertheless, the Chernobyl alum has shared a few details about her husband and their relationship. In 2025, she revealed they’d welcomed their first child, a daughter. Reflecting on how becoming a mother had changed her life, Buckley told British Vogue, “A lot of attention is given to this little baby, but your relationship to the world is new, your relationship with your partner is new, your relationship to your work is new.”
Here’s everything Jessie Buckley has shared about her husband, Freddie.

In a January 2024 appearance on the podcast Table Manners, the actress revealed how she connected with her now-husband. “We met on a blind date,” she told the hosts, adding that music executive Marc Robinson set them up together. Robinson had previously worked with Buckley on the 2018 musical drama Wild Rose, for which she earned a BAFTA nomination.
British Vogue reported that they were set up five years before their 2023 wedding, “going on a blind date in Hackney that involved a stroll along Regent’s Canal followed by drinks at The Dove on Broadway Market.”
Freddie is English and works in mental health.
Buckley shared more details on Table Manners, explaining her husband is “working in mental health. He’s gone back to university to work in mental health.” She also confirmed he’s English and hails from Islington.

The Hamnet actress and her co-star Paul Mescal went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast together in November 2025—but it wasn’t their chatter about the film that made headlines. Rather, Buckley left cat lovers shocked when she described an ultimatum she’d given to Freddie early in their relationship.
“When I started dating (my husband), he had two cats. This is bad, so I’m going to get canceled,” she began. “One of the cats was, like, a pedigree model bitch and she staged a coup against me. I’d come home and there’d just be like poo on my pillow. And I was like, ‘It’s me or the cats,” she told host Josh Horowitz.
“She didn’t like this interloper. ‘This is my house.’ And you took over,” Horowitz replied.
“But I won! Sorry,” Buckley joked.
In a March 2026 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she referenced her cat comments that had recently resurfaced online. “I am a lover of cats,” she said. “I woke up this morning—does the world think that I really don’t love cats? And it’s really weighed on me all day. I felt sick.”
They got married in 2023 and spent a year traveling together.
The Irish actress described her dreamy wedding—and the sentimental catering she got—during her Table Manners appearance. First, she revealed that they wed in their home, a historic property in the English countryside.
“Friends of ours…bought this old place for like nothing at an auction, pulled the weeds out of it, and just did the whole thing up. And then they showed us [what became] the house that we live in, which is like 1500s and falling down and orange…it’s a really amazing old house that’s been there forever,” she said. The 2026 British Vogue profile of Buckley specified that they got married “under the garden’s giant oak tree”—and that it took just seven weeks to plan their wedding.
As for the food on her and Freddie’s big day, they chose a local cafe called Towpath as their caterer. “When we first started dating we—because we lived in Dalston—we would go to the Towpath all the time… so they came and did the food for us,” Buckley explained.
“One of my favorite memories of the day was like…I wanted a keg of Guinness and I definitely wanted their cheese toasties at a certain hour,” she added.
Because the SAG strike occurred in 2023, many projects were pushed forward that year, allowing Buckley and Freddy to take multiple honeymoons. “We actually just kind of bottled into friend’s holidays. Loads of friends were going away, and they just rented a place … it was really nice,” she said on Table Manners. “Usually I’m away shooting or something, and because of the strike, everything got moved, so I’ve had a whole year just to, like, hang out.”

After revealing her pregnancy in April 2025, Buckley confirmed she’d given birth to her and Freddie’s daughter in an October appearance on The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast.
A month later, she told Elle about the beauty she found in motherhood. “The best thing about being a mom is just when even when you’re having a hard day, they give you these otherworldly little smiles and make your heart crack into a thousand pieces, and you think, ‘Oh, it’s all going to be okay,’” she said.
In a 2026 Deadline cover story, the actress explained that she and her husband enjoy the simple life together. “I light fires. We don’t have a TV. I cook. I just do the simplest things, and I need to step off…Everybody has a method of some sort, but I just like to simmer in it, but also be human and be with my husband, be with my daughter, cook, not care.
“I don’t think I could sustain where I like to go in my work if I didn’t have someplace to come back and just be absolutely human,” she added.

Buckley’s husband was by her side for one of the biggest nights of her career so far: the 2026 Golden Globes. While they weren’t photographed together on the red carpet, she gave him a shoutout during her acceptance speech for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama award.
“My husband, he’s really been enjoying the free canapés and cocktails, so thank you so much for having us along,” she joked near the end of the speech, with the camera cutting to a smiling Freddie.
