Arsenal ensured the unprecedented six English sides competing in this stage would not suffer a humiliating wipeout as they breezed past Bayer Leverkusen in their must-win second leg at the Emirates on Tuesday.

Stunning strikes from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice proved the difference with Arsenal running out 3-1 winners on aggregate, setting up a tie with Sporting CP who recovered a three-goal first-leg deficit to win 5-0 on the night against Bodo/Glimt, ending the Norwegian side’s fairytale run.

Manchester City and Chelsea endured harsher fortunes as both failed to stage what would have been a miraculous comeback on the night against two of Europe’s biggest hitters.

City, who spent much of the contest with 10 men, saw a stoppage-time Vincius Jr winner dent any semblance of pride they had left, with a 2-1 loss on the night taking the aggregate score to 5-1.

Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals after the Bundesliga side thrashed Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were demolished by holders Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge, suffering another three-goal beating.

Their progression means Liverpool, who came from behind to beat Galatasaray in some style at Anfield, will get a shot at revenge against PSG, the team who knocked them out after topping the league phase last term.

In Wednesday’s early kick-off, Newcastle put up a first-half fight in their second leg against five-time winners Barcelona, Anthony Elanga equalising twice in the opening half-hour, only to concede a Lamine Yamal penalty on the brink of half-time to enter the break trailing.

The floodgates then opened in the second-half as Barcelona scored four more to take the tie well out of the Magpies’ grasp, with Raphinha and Fermin Lopez adding to Robert Lewandowski’s brace to rout Newcastle 7-2.

They’ll face Atletico Madrid, who saw off a spirited Tottenham Hotspur to claim an entertaining 7-5 win across the two legs – with the damage done by the horror start made by Spurs in the Spanish capital.

The first leg of the quarter-finals will be held on April 7-8, while the second legs will take place a week later on April 14-15.
