A Clare GP is encouraging parents and college students to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of meningitis so they can recognise the early warning signs of the illness.
It follows an outbreak in Kent in the UK, where 27 cases have been linked to a university and two people have died.
The Health Service Executive says there is currently no indication of increased meningococcal disease in Ireland, with 12 cases reported so far this year compared to 60 across all of 2025.
Cases in children have fallen significantly since the introduction of a vaccination programme over a decade ago, but college students could still be at risk and Ennis GP Dr Máire Finn says they should be aware of the symptoms.
