The Irish Independent travelled to a distant part of Iceland to find out how a windswept volcanic island forged the career and the character of the Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson

Finding Heimir: An exclusive Irish Independent documentary

Early next week, a 71-year-old man living in Heimaey, the only inhabited island in Vestmannaeyjar, an archipelago off the south coast of Iceland, will go looking for his Irish tricolour.

It’s all part of Einar Hallgrimsson’s pre-match routine. The flagpole at the front of a house, that is just a three-minute drive from the handful of shops and restaurants that service the 4,300 or so residents of a community built around a port, has become an advertisement for the exploits of Heimaey’s most famous son.
