A third man has been charged in connection with a serious assault in Limerick city that has left a man in his fifties fighting for his life.

The incident occurred on Athlunkard Street shortly after 9:30 pm on St. Patrick’s night, sparking a major Garda investigation.

The victim remains in a serious condition at University Hospital Limerick as medical staff continue to monitor his injuries. To date, three men in their 20s have been arrested by Gardaí as part of the ongoing probe into the violence. While two of the suspects have already appeared before the courts, the third individual was charged today.

Local representatives have previously expressed shock at the level of violence witnessed over the bank holiday weekend. Gardaí have been maintaining a presence in the Athlunkard Street area as they continue to gather evidence and dashcam footage from the night of the attack.

The third man is due to appear before a special sitting of Limerick District Court at 5:45 pm this evening.
