Connacht’s all-time record points scorer Jack Carty has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old, who has played 231 times for the province since 2012, also won 11 Ireland caps between 2019 and 2022.

“It’s time to say thank you,” the Roscommon native said, after confirming his retirement this afternoon. “After 15 seasons with my boyhood club all good things understandably have to come to an end.

“As I reflect back on my time in Connacht Rugby, I feel fortunate to have been a part of the transformation we have all witnessed.”

Carty made his Connacht debut as a 20-year-old in October 2012, and he would go on to overtake Eric Elwood as the province’s record points scorer in January 2023, with 1260 points as of March 2026 (including 21 tries).

The out-half played 20 games during the province’s iconic 2015/16 season Pro12 title-winning season and was named Connacht captain by former head coach Andy Friend in 2022, serving as skipper until 2024.

His 231 appearances for the province ranks him fifth in their all-time list, behind John Muldoon, Denis Buckley, Michael Swift and Tiernan O’Halloran, the latter of whom Carty could overtake before the end of the season.

An Ireland U20 international in 2012, he earned his first Ireland senior call-up for the 2019 Six Nations, making his debut during that campaign against Italy, before also featuring at the 2019 World Cup, and winning the most recent of his 11 caps away to France in 2022.

“Jack Carty epitomises everything that is good about Connacht Rugby,” Connacht Rugby CEO Willie Ruane said.

“His story from grassroots rugby at Buccaneers RFC and Marist College, right through the Connacht Academy and Professional team, to the World Cup with Ireland, is one that inspires every girl and boy in Connacht that they can do the same.

“His legacy will endure not just in his performances on the field, but also how he has represented the province off the field. He leaves a positive impression on everyone he talks to, whether it be his teammates, the wider management and staff, our partners, or our supporters.

“On behalf of everyone at Connacht Rugby I want to sincerely thank him for his 15 years of unwavering loyalty and dedication to his home province, and wish him, his wife and family every health and happiness into the future.”
