Tributes have been pouring in for a gifted young footballer following his sudden death this week.

Shea Haughey, who was just 12 years old and lived in College Gardens in Newry, tragically passed away at home on Monday, March 23.

The local community has been left reeling by the young lad’s death. A death notice described him as the beloved son of Claire and David, adored brother of Rebecca and Evie, and cherished grandson of Mary and Martin (Keenan) and Vera and David (Haughey).

A Year 8 student at St Joseph’s High School, Newry, he shone on the sports field, playing for Ballyholland Harps GAC and Midway United FC Newry.

Paying homage to the young lad, the GAA club posted a photo of Shea with his team-mates at its underage awards back in October, reports Belfast Live.

A club spokesperson said: “It is with the deepest and most heartfelt sadness that we have learned of the passing of our much-loved underage player, Shea Haughey.

“Everyone at Ballyholland Harps GAC extends our sincere condolences, love, and prayers to Davy, Clare, Rebecca, Evie and the entire family circle at this incredibly difficult time.

“Shea will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His coaches spoke of him as one of the warmest, kindest, and most genuine young men they ever had the privilege to coach – always smiling, always a pleasure to be around, and a true credit to his family and club.”

They added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shea’s family, friends, and teammates. Please know that as a club, we stand with you and are here for you in any way we can.”

As a mark of respect, the club have cancelled all U14 football activity until further notice.

In its tribute to its Under-14 goalkeeper, Midway United FC stated: “Shea was a valued member of our club and a much-loved teammate and friend. His presence, spirit, and love for the game will never be forgotten, and he will always remain a part of the Midway United family.

“At this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Shea’s family, friends, and teammates. We ask that the family’s privacy is respected as they come to terms with this devastating loss.

“As a mark of respect the club have cancelled all football training and matches until further notice. Rest in peace, Shea. You will always be in our hearts.”
