There were no shortage of Ireland players that stood up to be counted in Prague on Thursday evening, but as has so often been the case over the last decade, Seamus Coleman was right at the top of that list.

Having played a total of nine minutes of football since the November international window, there were some serious concerns about his fitness coming into this game. Not only would he start, but he would last until midway through the first half of extra-time before being withdrawn.

It was a brilliant performance from the Donegal man, but one that will not be rewarded with a trip to the World Cup.

Seamus Coleman Answers Question On Ireland Retirement

Recommended

Seamus Coleman looks set to end his career without every playing in a World Cup, a stage that a player of his talent and commitment certainly deserved to grace.

Considering his age and lack of football in recent times, this could well be the final time we see him in an Ireland shirt. However, the man himself is not thinking about that possibility just yet.

When asked by Tony O’Donoghue about potential retirement on RTÉ, the Everton defender gave an answer fitting of the man.

‘You’d be disappointed to let them back into the game, for sure’

Right now after the disappointment?

No, I would never think of myself that quickly after the nation was so disappointed. That’s something that will come later down the line.

I’m just disappointed for the lads. Disappointed for all the fans.

That’s not something in my thoughts at this in moment in time…

Listen, it would have been great to get to America for the World Cup. We’re all going to be disappointed in there.

I’ve enjoyed getting back into the fold and being part of it again, wearing that green jersey. I’m just disappointed I couldn’t help a bit more to get the lads over the line.

A measure of the man.

If this was indeed Seamus Coleman’s final ever Ireland appearance, he can certainly go out saying he gave his all for his country.
