Even though this movie with two Stranger Things stars is now available to watch at home, it also just passed a major domestic box office milestone.
Sony’s animated film GOAT features an impressive cast led by Stranger Things actors Caleb McLaughlin and David Harbour. McLaughlin voices the protagonist, a teenage goat named Will Harris who wants to fulfill his dream of being a professional roarball competitor, while Harbour voices Archie Everhardt, a rhinoceros who plays for the roarball team known as the Vineland Thorns. The film had its wide release in theaters on February 13 and had its home digital release on March 24.
Per Deadline, only four days after the digital release, GOAT has now grossed $100.7 million at the domestic box office. This comes after earning another $2 million domestically this weekend, pushing the movie past the $100 million box office milestone during its seventh week in theaters. Prior to this weekend, the movie’s global gross was $176.2 million.
GOAT had a reported production budget of $80 million. Since it has made more than double this worldwide, meaning it has passed the breakeven point, the movie can be considered a box office success. The animated Sony movie benefited from being the first family-friendly major blockbuster of the year. It did not have much competition in this area until Pixar’s Hoppers debuted on March 6, making it a go-to movie to see in theaters for children and their families, which has helped keep box office momentum strong long after the opening weekend.
It also helps that the film has been well-received and had positive word of mouth. In ScreenRant’s GOAT review, Gregory Nussen gives the sports comedy movie seven out of 10 stars and writes that “Tyree Dillihay’s directorial debut is a really effective, stunningly animated, inspiring success” and is “an underdog story… for a new generation that is ready for a new, more inclusive kind of game.” On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a “Certified Fresh” 84% score from critics and a “Verified Hot” 93% score from audiences. This reception continues to endure, with the domestic box office milestone showing that audiences are still seeing GOAT in theaters despite being able to watch it at home now.
For McLaughlin and Harbour, GOAT is the first movie or series they have been in since the Stranger Things series finale came to Netflix on December 31, other than McLaughlin playing Lucas Sinclair in a Saturday Night Live sketch that also included Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler and Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson. Harbour is now starring in the new HBO Max series DTF St. Louis alongside Jason Bateman and Linda Cardellini. Later this year, Harbour will also be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Doomsday, where he is reprising the role of Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian that he played in Black Widow and Thunderbolts*.
In addition to the two Stranger Things actors, the GOAT voice cast includes Gabrielle Union, Aaron Pierre, Nicola Coughlan, Nick Kroll, Patton Oswalt, Jennifer Hudson, Sherry Cola, Jennifer Lewis, Eduardo Franco, Andrew Santino, Bobby Lee, Wayne Knight, and NBA star Steph Curry. Along with starring, Curry is also one of the producers of the film.
GOAT is still playing in select theaters and is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube.
