Scream 8 is reportedly in the works, following the record-breaking box office success of Scream 7.

Deadline said that Spyglass is working on Scream 8 with Poker Face co-showrunners Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing.

Scream 7 made over $200 million at the global box office, setting a record for the franchise in the process. The first Scream film made $173 million worldwide from theaters back in 1996, unadjusted for inflation.

Scream: Ranking Every Ghostface So FarThe Scream series differentiates itself from other slasher series in many ways, beginning with its meta approach, but one other notable aspect is its lack of an ongoing villain. Of course, that’s never really been a problem for Scream as the concept is part of its baked-in formula. Rather than an ongoing killer, Scream has mostly stuck to the same ongoing heroine, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), along with other key characters like Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Each movie is a whodunnit, with a new killer donning the familiar Ghostface persona, complete with mask and robe, until their identity is revealed in the final act. Almost all of these movies have multiple killers too, working in tandem together, meaning as we go into the new Scream 7, there’s already been plenty of Ghostfaces to go around. But which of them has stood out the most and ranks as the best? We’re here to help!

Some Quick Notes: We’re sticking with the canon movie Ghostfaces only, so sorry to you Scream TV series fans. Also, the parameters here take into account many factors, in terms of the killers’ impact on the franchise, how memorable they are as characters, how clever their plan was, etc. In some cases, we are noting high body counts, or a lack thereof (and whether other factors outweigh that), but keep in mind that can get tricky because there are many times where things are murky on which specific Ghostface killed which exact victim when partners are involved.

Nostalgia played a big part in Scream 7’s success. Neve Campbell, who stars as franchise protagonist Sidney Prescott, returned for Scream 7 after skipping Scream 6 over a pay dispute. According to Variety, Campbell secured a nearly $7 million deal for Scream 7, whereas Courteney Cox, who plays reporter and veteran murder spree survivor Gale Weathers, was paid $2 million.

News of Scream 8 comes as little surprise, then. Speaking earlier this month, Scream 7 writer and director Kevin Williamson revealed Neve Campbell already had a “great” idea for Scream 8, which he promised would be made as long as Scream 7 was a success. Well, that didn’t take long!

IGN’s Scream 7 review returned a 6/10. We said: “Scream 7 packs in plenty of satisfying slasher action, even if it gets a little too comfortable playing the hits (and deep cuts and killer tracks).” Check out our Scream 7 ending explained to find out what it all means for the future.
