Both Sligo University Hospital and University Hospital Galway had some of the highest numbers of patients treated without a hospital bed throughout the months of March.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation have said that 11,130 patients throughout the country have been treated without a hospital bed last month, making it the second highest March on record in terms of hospital overcrowding.
Sligo University Hospital was the third most overcrowded, with 924 patients, while at 862 University Hospital Galway had the fifth highest numbers.
In other facilities across the region, there were 528 patients treated without a hospital bed in Mayo University Hospital in March and 75 at Portiuncula Hospital.
Commenting on the figures, general secretary of the INMO Phil Ní Sheaghdha said; “This is the third consecutive month that we have seen over 10,000 people on trolleys in our hospitals, and our members are now concerned that this will become the new normal.
“These are not acceptable standards in healthcare or in working conditions,” she continued, “and it is vital that any shortfalls in staffing and resources are addressed so that this situation does not continue or worsen over the coming months.”
