While Ireland look to have an increasingly settled squad over the last 12 months or so, Heimir Hallgrimsson has made it clear that he is willing to bring new faces into the setup in a bid to add a bit of extra quality.

Bosun Lawal and James Abankwah would make their international debuts this week, two players who had long been identified as future Ireland players after their exploits at youth level. Then you have Harvey Vale, who was brought into the camp for March after completing his switch from England.

The FAI have been persistent in their attempts to recruit Irish qualified players from overseas in recent times, something that could continue with some high profile names in the future.

Ireland Still Hopeful Of Liam Delap International Switch

Recommended

Liam Delap is a player that has long been coveted by the FAI, with his father Rory having been an Ireland international in the past. It has been suggested in years gone by that the striker was open to the move.

However, his rising fortunes at club level seemed to put him within reach of an England call-up over the last 18 months or so. However, his move to Chelsea has not worked out so far and he currently finds himself well down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel.

Heimir Hallgrimsson was asked about the possibility of Liam Delap switching to Ireland after the game against North Macedonia, suggesting that it was entirely down to the player at this point (h/t The 42):

It’s a decision that is still just his. He hasn’t played for England and it doesn’t look like he is going to the World Cup. He looks like he is far away from that. But, again, it is his decision…

We always are on the lookout. If there are good players, we will always want to improve our squad. All coaches would like to improve their squads. We would appreciate any position, if there is a player better than what we have.

Liam Delap would certainly be a good addition to the Ireland squad, adding to the forward options alongside the likes of Troy Parrott and Evan Ferguson.

John O’Shea has discussed a move with the player’s father and his former Ireland teammate Rory Delap, saying:

Yeah it’s in Liam’s corner as they say. Let’s wait and see.

It will be interesting to see how this process plays out over the coming months. Now 23-years old, Liam Delap may opt to bide his time in the attempt to earn an England call-up.

In saying that, the opportunity to play in a home Euro 2028 for Ireland may be something that is difficult to turn down.
