The Fuel Allowance has been extended by one month as part of a series of measures introduced by the Government to tackle soaring fuel costs.
A €250m package unveiled by the Government last month aimed at giving relief to households and businesses facing surging fuel costs amid the war in the Middle East. The extension of the Fuel Allowance has benefitted over 470,000 households.
The Fuel Allowance season normally begins in late September of each year and ends in April. The 2025/2026 Fuel Allowance season started on Monday, 22 September 2025 and it is paid for 28 weeks.
The scheme has now been extended until May 1 due to the recent increases in fuel costs. The Fuel Allowance is worth €38 per week, so the extension is worth a total of €152 for eligible households.
The other measures introduced by the Government include cutting excise duty on diesel by 20 per cent and petrol by 15 per cent. The National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) levy of 2 cent per litre has also been suspended, bringing the effective reduction to 22 cent on diesel and 17 cent on petrol. The Government has also increased the maximum repayment allowable under the Diesel Rebate Scheme, from 7.5 cent up to 12 cent per litre of diesel.
This has been backdated to January 1 and remain in place until June 30.
