Patients are at an increased risk of picking up superbugs and other infections in hospitals across the country as staff try to deliver modern medicine in old buildings, a new set of inspection reports has warned.

­In several facilities, patients are also being treated in understaffed wards with key specialist jobs vacant, the reports from the Health Information and ­Quality Authority (Hiqa) revealed yesterday.
