Limerick claimed the Division 1A title with a 1-27 to 1-21 victory in a game that had some of the edge and intensity of a Munster championship clash.

They flew out of the blocks, racing into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead, only for Cork to hit back in dramatic fashion when a loose pass from Diarmaid Byrnes was tapped into an empty net by Cork forward Brian Hayes.

Cork grew into the contest from there, but a superb goal from Aaron Gillane restored Limerick’s control before half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Cork battling back to within two points before Limerick found another gear to close the game out.

Gillane finished with 1-7, while Aidan O’Connor contributed 0-8. For Cork, Hayes ended with 1-3 and Alan Connolly added 0-7 in a spirited display.

It means Limerick have now beaten Cork twice this season, setting up an intriguing rematch in the Munster Championship later this season.

Cian Lynch’s Tribute To Caroline Currid Draws Interesting Reaction From Limerick Fans

However, it was Lynch’s remarks in his speech after the final whistle that were the most intriguing.

The Limerick captain took time to acknowledge the return of sports psychologist Caroline Currid, drawing one of the loudest cheers of the day from the Limerick support.

Caroline, it’s absolutely great to have you back involved with us.

That mother figure we’ve all spoke about, looking forward to working with you again throughout the year and we love having you involved, so thanks Caroline.

It was a moment that highlighted one of the most important members of the Limerick backroom team.

On the pitch, they look as formidable as ever and surely John Kiely’s men must be the favourites to claim the All-Ireland later in the summer.
