Plans to establish a League of Ireland team in Meath are set to take a formal step forward this week with the official launch of a project to introduce a national underage club for the county by 2027, and a longer-term vision of making it a senior club.
The Irish Independent understands that an announcement outlining the proposed direction for a club named Meath FC is imminent, although the FAI has yet to give the idea a formal green light to proceed. It’s a concept that has been floated in recent years, with former FAI CEO Bernard O’Byrne vocal on plans to establish a base in Athboy – with a working title of Royal Meath FC mentioned.
