Donald Trump’s threat to obliterate an “whole civilisation” in Iran has triggered demands for his removal from office, with a former White House director calling for him to be ousted “immediately”.

“Wake up: he is calling for a nuclear strike,” said Anthony Scaramucci, who served in Trump’s first administration in July 2017. “Seek his removal immediately,” the former communications director added.

The president unleashed another alarming tirade on Truth Social as his ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz draws near. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” he wrote. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

Trump continued by stating that “47 years of extortion, corruption and death, will finally end” should Iran fail to agree to a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait, a waterway through which roughly 20% of global oil and gas supplies flow.

He added: “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”, reports the Mirror.

“We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

In response to Trump’s warnings, Iran pledged to cut off oil and gas supplies to the US and its allies. The IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) declared via Telegram that its “restraint has ended” and that it will deprive the US and its allies “of the region’s oil and gas for years to come”.

Ceasefire negotiations had been underway with mediators, however Trump’s recent threat to obliterate Iran’s “whole civilisation” has thrown those efforts into jeopardy, according to the Wall Street Journal. An official confirmed that Iran has since severed all communications with the US.

Trump had issued a deadline of 8pm ET (1am on Wednesday UK time) for the Iranian regime to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

US-Israeli forces have since reportedly launched strikes on Kharg Island – Iran’s principal oil export hub. The island accounts for 94% of the country’s crude oil exports, functioning as the key terminal for shipping oil from the mainland to global markets.

A significant assault on Kharg Island could cripple Iran’s economy for years to come.
