Rory McIlroy’s Champions Dinner at The Masters featured a subtle, and very expensive, nod to Shane Lowry.

Reporting from Paul Kimmage has revealed that one of the wines served on McIlroy’s menu was far from a random selection.

Instead, it was a bottle that carried real significance from the night McIlroy finally got over the line at Augusta.

Following McIlroy’s dramatic playoff victory over Justin Rose last year, Lowry took it upon himself to mark the occasion in his own way, and in doing so, managed to bend one of Augusta National’s famously strict rules.

While McIlroy was tied up with post-win media duties, Lowry went straight to the club’s sommelier with a very specific request.

Despite being told that wine cannot be purchased to take off the premises, Lowry wasn’t taking no for an answer.

As McIlroy later recalled, Lowry pushed for an exception, and got one.

The Irishman secured a case of 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild, one of the most prestigious and expensive wines in the world, before bringing it back to McIlroy’s rental house to celebrate.

The pair, along with friends, shared a few glasses that night, a moment that clearly stuck.

Each bottle is believed to be worth between $1,000 and $2,000, meaning the celebratory purchase likely cost Lowry somewhere in the region of $6,000 to $12,000.

Fast forward to this year’s Champions Dinner, and that same wine made a reappearance, a quiet but meaningful tribute to that night and the friendship behind it.

For all the tradition and prestige that surrounds Augusta, it’s often the smaller, more personal touches that stand out most.

And in this case, McIlroy’s menu told a story that went far beyond the golf.
