Barcelona v Atletico Madrid

WHEN: Wednesday, April 8th, 8pm
WHERE: Camp Nou, Barcelona
TV: TNT Sports

Lamine Yamal to score anytime

If there was ever one slight criticism of Lamine Yamal, it’s that he could be scoring more goals. He’s improved that part of his game this season, already netting three more goals than he did last season (21-18), rubbishing claims that he doesn’t have a high enough scoring output for his talent.

Barcelona faced off against Atletico Madrid over the weekend and came away 2-1 winners. Yamald didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet, but was easily the best player on the pitch, creating five chances and having seven shots overall. He’s scored five goals across his eight starts in the Champions League this term, maintaining a shot volume of 3.63 shots per 90.

He’s also on penalties for Barcelona, which can serve as a route to goal if Yamal doesn’t find the back of the net from open play. Barcelona score for fun at home, they netted seven against Newcastle in their most recent Champions League assignment, with the young Spaniard scoring from the penalty spot on that occasion.

Julian Alvarez to score or assist

Julian Alvarez is such a brilliant player, and was rested over the weekend with this game in mind. He’s registered 12 goal contributions across just 11 starts in the Champions League this term; only Kylian Mbappe (14) has registered more goal contributions in the Champions League this season.

I thought Man City were wrong to let him go when they did, and he’s shown his quality since departing England with 46 goals across his 101 appearances for Atletico Madrid since 2024 (0.45 goals per game). His output in the Champions League is particularly promising for this angle. He enjoys playing on the biggest stages, and his record in the Champions League shows that Atletico can rely on him to offer an attacking threat.

Pedri to be Fouled 3+ fouls

Pedri is my favourite player in Europe at the moment. He’s so good at controlling the game and is usually a few steps ahead of every player on the pitch. He was fouled five times when these sides clashed over the weekend, accounting for a third of the total fouls that Atletico Madrid committed.

Pedri had 113 touches in that game, which is a bit of an exaggeration on his average (106.6 per 90), but Pedri seeing such large amounts of the ball makes him a solid player to back when it comes to winning fouls. He’s drawn 19 fouls across his seven starts in the Champions League this season (3.05 per 90) – offering the perfect platform for him to win a few more fouls here.
