The pair of filmmaker David Dhawan and actor Govinda was a big hit in the 1990s and 2000s. They collaborated on a number of laugh riots in their era. One among them was Saajan Chale Sasural (1996). Apart from Govinda, it also starred Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Kader Khan, Satish Kaushik, Shakti Kapoor, Satish Shah, among others. The film told the story of Shyamsunder (Govinda), an aspiring singer and musician, who migrates to Mumbai from a rural area. Circumstances force him to marry two women – Pooja (Karisma) and Divya (Tabu) – and face its circumstances.

30 years of Saajan Chale Sasural EXCLUSIVE: Govinda’s climax scene was shot after the film was completed, reveals writer Rumy Jafry; also hopes for the actor’s return: “I wish to work with Govinda again, but the thing is…”
On Saajan Chale Sasural’s 30th anniversary, Rumy Jafry, who wrote the film’s screenplay, recalled some interesting and funny incidents from the making of the film in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama.
Last moment climax addition
Saajan Chale Sasural is one of the rare films about a man stuck with two women where he doesn’t go with any one of them in the end. It is like an open ending. In the last scene, the protagonist breaks the fourth wall and warns the men out there about the dire consequences of marrying two women.
Jafry revealed that the last scene was an afterthought. In fact, it was added after the film was completed. “While watching the (trial of the) film, I felt that there should be a message in the end where he says that he has had to face such consequences despite unintentionally marrying two women, so think what would happen to you if you purposely do this,” he said. “I wrote the scene and asked David sir if he can shoot one more portion of Govinda as patchwork. David ji was instantly convinced about the idea. Even if you see the scene today, you would realize that it was shot as patchwork due to Govinda’s hair and location.”
When mother-in-law raised eyebrows
Jafry said that even today people keep telling him that Saajan Chale Sasural is one of their favourite comedies. However, at the time of the release and later he had to face tough questions from his to-be mother-in-law regarding the subject of this and his upcoming films.
Jafry recalled, “She asked me, ‘You wrote Saajan Chale Sasural?’. I said yes. She said that when she and her family saw the film, they were discussing that the writer of this film is such a ‘shaitaan’ that he showed the man take his two wives for honeymoon and both were unaware! But she also said that they laughed and enjoyed the film. Then she asked which film I am working on now. I said Gharwali Baharwali. She asked if this one also has two wives. I said yes (laughs).”
He continued, “Much later, she again asked about my next project. I said it’s Biwi No. 1. When she asked about the subject, I said that it has Salman (Khan) and Karisma (Kapoor) as a married couple but Salman has an affair with Sushmita (Sen). Now, she got serious and said, ‘Why do you only think about about one man with two women? Can’t you think about one man with one woman?’” (laughs)
Bond with David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan started with Saajan Chale Sasural
Jafry has written a number of films for David Dhawan. It all started with Saajan Chale Sasural, although Coolie No. 1 (1995), his second film with the filmmaker, released first. He said that ever since his first film with David Dhawan, his bond with him has been family-like.
“There is not a single day when I don’t talk to David sahab,” said Jafry. “Just last evening, we were together for dinner. It was my birthday recently on March 23. David sahab called me at Mehboob Studios (where he was shooting for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai). He ordered food and cake for me and celebrated my birthday. I feel shy with all this. But he and Varun (Dhawan) got me to cut the cake. Pooja (Hegde) was also there. I have family relations with him. It has gone beyond work. If you enquire about me in the industry, you will get to know that I have worked with people not just at a professional level. I have always worked emotionally like a family.”
Hoping for Govinda’s return
As Rumy Jafry has written a number of David Dhawan films, it naturally means that he has worked a lot with Govinda too. He said that he shares a great bond with the entertaining actor. When asked whether, like other senior stars, Govinda should also mark a return on OTT, Jafry said, “He is such a great actor from our industry. He is such a big entertainer. The public wants to see him again. I wish to work with him as a writer and director, so does David sahab. He is a favourite of all of us. He can do OTT, films and everything. But the thing is that he should do.”
