The announcement of another private hospital closure has rung more alarm bells for the overburdened public mental health system.

Aurora Healthcare said last month that it would close the 34-bed Mackay Private Hospital on 16 June because of “rising operational and maintenance costs”.

Most of its beds are for rehabilitation, but eight are for mental health patients.

AusDoc understands that the eight beds are not fully occupied. But the hospital is the sole provider of subacute private mental health beds in the Mackay region in North Queensland.
