NEW SIGNAGE for a betting shop has been denied planning permission by the local authority in Limerick

Bar One Racing applied for planning permission for additional signage at Unit 8 of the Caherdavin Shopping Centre on theEnnis Road.

In correspondence signed by “Caherdavin residents” concerns were raised about the impact of the signage on young people.

The group stated that, “The signage on this unit is promoting gambling to young people on their way to local schools” and that “the signage currently in place is excessive and not in keeping with the local area which is a mature residential area, with a mix of young families, mature families and senior citizens.”

Another observation lodged with the planning authority stated: “Excessive advertising of a bookmaking business in a residential area is encouraging and normalising betting for impressionable teenagers and young people leading to issues with gambling addiction in later life and all the problems that are associated with this addiction.”

The council’s letter of refusal to Caherdavin’s Bar One Racing betting shop, stated: “The proposed signage, by reason of the excessive scale, coupled with its location on a highly visible corner site would result in an over-scaled and visually obtrusive feature which would not be capable of satisfactory assimilation into the area.”

They added: “The signage would constitute unduly prominent and obtrusive features, and would accordingly detract to an undue degree, from the visual amenities of the area.”

The local authority further wrote that the planning application lodged was contrary to the Limerick Development Plan.

Bar One Racing have the opportunity to appeal the refusal of the planning permission over the coming weeks should they wish to do so.
