When in 2018 the Gilets Jaunes — the Yellow Vests — first took to the streets of France to protest against rising fuel prices, it felt like a spectacular uprising.

The activists, named after their trademark high-visibility motoring jackets, focused their main demonstrations on Paris, causing abject chaos that spread across the country.
