At the funeral of former Wicklow shop owner Paddy Darcy, who had a love for racing greyhounds and was “one of the easiest going men in Ireland”, his son paid a moving tribute, describing his father as “the last of the whistlers” and honouring him by whistling the theme tune to TV show Glenroe.
Huge crowds of mourners gathered at St Peter and Paul’s Church in Crossbridge to celebrate the life of Paddy, affectionately known as ‘The Bossman’, a beloved local man who became a cornerstone of the community through the family grocery shop at the crossroads, known for its variety of penny bars and as a place to meet and swap stories.
