Big housing boost as 100 new homes get approval across Limerick

COUNCILLORS have approved plans for 100 new homes across the city.

At this month’s metropolitan meeting, members were asked to decide on whether to accept, reject or change plans for houses at Ros Mor at Old Cork Road, Mary Street in the city centre, and Toppins Field near Southill.

It is the final project where more than half of these homes will go, with 57 new units planned across three plots of land in a field which is long idle.

Fifteen two-storey three-bed terraced houses are planned here, alongside four two-storey four-bed terraces.

On top of this, it’s envisaged there will be one three-storey duplex apartment, 18 two-bed duplex apartments.

A duplex apartment is a single residential unit that’s split into two separate living spaces, either side-by-side or one above the other.

Also planned for Toppins Field is 18 one-bedroom apartments and a single two-room apartment.

Following an amendment from local Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely, it was decided 23 of the 57 new homes will go to people on the housing waiting list, the others will be offered to people on middle incomes as affordable homes.

The two other housing developments will mainly be made up of social houses, for people on the council housing waiting list.

At Mary Street in the city centre, 30 apartments are planned in a complex rising up between three and five storeys.

These will be made up of nine studio apartments, seven one-bedroom apartments, 10 two-bed apartments and four three-bed apartments.

Meanwhile, at Ros Mor, 13 homes are planned – eight with two-bedrooms, four with one-bedroom and one three-bedroomed.

Metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler hailed the approval of the new housing developments in Limerick as “a good morning’s work”.
