What isolated town doesn’t have a chequered past? Particularly a quaint one 40 miles off the coast of New England. But something lurks beneath the surface… Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys, embracing the ‘Just For Men’ aesthetic) is clinging to the hope of reviving his dying island community. There’s no internet to speak of, the mobile coverage is tragic, and there’s the small matter of having to contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. While he wants their respect, they mostly see him as ineffective. Still, he’s determined to forge a better life for his son by reinventing the island as a tourist hotspot. The plus side? It works; tourists start showing up. The downside? The so-called ‘ridiculous’ tales of wanton cannibalism crop up again. Blending classic horror elements with character‑driven comedy, it’s hard not to expect something compelling with Rhys involved, even if it could wander into familiar trope territory.
