Major garda response to incident in Limerick as man arrested

THERE was a major response by An Garda Siochana – involving around 10 gardai and four vehicles – to a public order incident in Limerick city.

It occurred at around 8.30pm on Wednesday on O’Connell Street, close to the St Augustine’s Church. The city centre was thronged with people on the sunny evening.

Videos and photos, which have been widely shared on social media, show a man being led into the back of a garda van.

Following a query from Limerick Live, a garda spokesperson said gardai attended the scene of a public order incident that occurred on O’Connell Street, Limerick city on Wednesday, April 29 at approximately 8:30 pm.

“A male, aged in his 30s, was arrested and conveyed to a garda station in Limerick. He has since been charged and is due to appear in court at a later date,” said a garda spokesperson.

It is understood that gardai reacted quickly to reports of threatening behaviour by person(s) on O’Connell Street and no assault occurred.
