Irish Rail apologises as passengers locked out of station on Limerick commuter line

IRISH Rail has issued an apology to passengers who were left locked out of a railway station and unable to access their train.

Customers taking the first service between Nenagh and Ballybrophy were left unable to access the station platform, with the gates locked.

It sparked delays to the opening services from the railway station, which is located along the Limerick Colbert to Ballybrophy line.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail apologised to customers, saying: “This was an error on the part of our security provider that opens the station each morning. A member of staff was despatched to open the station when the issue was reported.”

They added the 07:37 train between Nenagh and Ballybrophy in Co Laois was delayed by 35 minutes.

It meant customers missed their connection to Dublin Heuston station.

However, the Irish Rail spokesperson added an alternative train was dispatched to ensure passengers could get to the capital.

The issue was highlighted on Nenagh and Tipperary’s Community Facebook page, with one post reading: “Between the locked up building, limited train service and issues like this, there really needs to be more thought put into developing better access to public rail infrastructure in Nenagh.”

As things stand, there are just three services from Nenagh towards Limerick Colbert station on weekdays – at 07:49, 09:50 and 19:55.

This service calls at Birdhill and Castleconnell.

Only two trains come back from Colbert to the Tipperary town – at 06:45 and 17:10.

As for the remainder of the line to Ballybrophy, there are two outbound services from Nenagh, at 07:53 and 18:03 on weekdays.

The only return services are at 09:00 and 19:05.
