The Birches Alzheimer’s Daycare Centre will host its annual Tea Day on Saturday May 9th from 11am to 2pm.

It’s part of the national fundraiser by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) on Thursday May 7th which will see people all over the country gather for a cuppa and a catch up to support the 64,000 people in Ireland whose lives have been impacted by dementia.

The Birches on the Priorland Road, Dundalk is the north branch of ASI and celebrated its silver jubilee last year.

So where will the money raised locally go? In addition to supporting the running of its day care service and an outreach programme at The Birches, Rathabbey in Cooley, and the “Day Care At Home” service, there is also a monthly family support group meeting in The Birches every first Tuesday at 7pm to provide a space for the carer to sit and take time for themselves with great peer support available as well as being a good source of information, as those attending are travelling the same road with a loved one living with dementia.

In addition to providing telephone support monthly for everyone on the referral/waiting list to access the day care centre, The Birches also hosts a Social Club on the third Saturday of the month from St. Gerard’s Hall, St. Alphonsus Road (behind St. Joseph’s Redemptorist Church) from 11am to 1pm and has an activity group for those with early on-set dementia with activities driven by the clients themselves.
