Come to Your Census

During April 1926, the Irish Free State carried out its first ever census as a self-governing nation, the results of which have been locked away in the National Archives ever since. However, these records have now entered the public domain, and to celebrate the moment, familiar figures are participating in a two-part programme combing through the data to investigate their own family histories, unearthing some extraordinary and surprising facts in the process.

First up is trade unionist Mick Lynch, who looks into his father’s family ties to the slums of Cork. Meanwhile, Raidió na Gaeltachta’s Gormfhlaith Ní Thuairisg investigates the Irish language’s impact on her clan, and architect Dermot Bannon takes a moving trip back to early 20th-century Waterford. The final edition can be seen next week when novelist and UL professor of creative writing Joseph O’Connor, actor Eileen Walsh and RTÉ Radio 1 presenter Louise Duffy take part.
