A car ploughed into people on a street in the eastern German city of Leipzig, leaving at least two dead and several injured, authorities said.

Leipzig mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed the deaths, adding nothing was known about the motive of the vehicle driver.

Police said the driver had been arrested and no longer posed a danger.

A ⁠damaged Volkswagen SUV ‌with a person on top of the ⁠vehicle was ‌seen speeding through a pedestrian zone, local broadcaster Radio Leipzig ⁠reported.

The broadcaster cited eyewitnesses as saying ⁠there were several bodies reportedly covered with sheets as well as a stabbing.
