A man who died after being placed in a suspected headlock in North Co Dublin has been named locally as David O’Mahony.
Mr O’Mahony (38) died following an alleged row at a house in Artane in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A man in his 60s, known to Mr O’Mahony, was arrested at the scene but has since been released without charge. Gardai will now send a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). This follows claims made to them that the alleged perpetrator did not intend to kill the victim.
Sources say gardai are investigating claims that the man in his 60s intervened in a row between Mr O’Mahony and another man known to him, shortly after midnight. It is claimed that the man in his 60s put the victim into a headlock and he was ‘choked out.’

Gardai have been told that the victim was engaged in a fight with another man and that the man in his 60s did not intend to kill him.
Sources say the investigation into this tragic death is complex and establishing the facts will take time.
A technical examination of the scene was conducted by the Garda Technical Bureau on Saturday morning.
Mr O’Mahony’s body was removed for a post-mortem examination which will determine the course of the garda investigation.
In an update on Sunday morning, Gardai confirmed the arrested man has been released without charge. They said a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
In a statement, Gardai said: “The scene remains preserved and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place later today. Investigations are ongoing.”
