Jarly Óg Burns finally had the perfect comeback for his father Jarlath Burns after Armagh ended their long Ulster final heartbreak in Clones.

Armagh defeated Monaghan 2-28 to 0-25 after extra time to capture their first Ulster title since 2008, when current manager Kieran McGeeney captained the county to glory.

It finally ended a brutal run of near misses for Armagh, who had lost their previous three Ulster finals, twice on penalties and once after extra time.

Burns played a huge role in the victory, scoring 0-3 and battling through what appeared to be a badly damaged nose after taking a heavy blow during the first half.

Speaking afterwards, Burns admitted the memories of those previous heartbreaks had entered Armagh minds when Monaghan staged a late comeback from seven points down.

That kind of did creep into our mind at some point there.

Fair play to Monaghan, they didn’t roll over there.

They kept harrying and they really made us earn it today.

The game eventually swung Armagh’s way in extra time, with Oisín O’Neill firing home a crucial goal while man of the match Oisín Conaty continued a sensational afternoon that saw him score 0-6 from play.

Burns himself was forced off temporarily after suffering the facial injury but returned to help finish the job.

Those things happen.

Oisín O’Neill came on and sure Oisín does what Oisín does, he was brilliant there.

Thankfully we finished the job then.

But it was Burns’ answer about his father afterwards that instantly became one of the moments of the day.

Jarlath Burns captained Armagh to Ulster glory back in 1999 and, according to his son, had never let him forget that particular medal imbalance.

I always told him that I had the All-Ireland.

But he let me know about the Ulster there for years and years.

So look, it’s nice to have another Ulster medal in the house.

For a family steeped in Armagh football, it was a fitting line after the county’s first provincial triumph in almost two decades.
