Patrick Hoban is without doubt one of the best strikers the League of Ireland has ever seen, and even at the age of 34 he’s shown no signs of slowing down.
Known best for his two legendary spells at Dundalk FC, where he became the club’s highest goalscorer of all time in 2023 and won three Premier Division titles, the Galway native has also enjoyed time across the water at Oxford United, Stevenage, Grimsby Town and Mansfield.
A move to Derry City at the start of 2024 was highly anticipated, but despite winning the golden boot with 15 goals in his first season, he was let go last summer by manager Tiernan Lynch following a reported breakdown in communications.
He’s since picked up his scintillating form in the Northern Irish Premier Division, scoring an incredible 25 goals in 27 appearances this campaign as Glentoran secured a second place finish, missing out on the title to Larne by just four points.

Plenty of Irish football fans have taken to the comments and quotes to voice their shock and confusion at this story which has seemingly been pulled from the sky. Regardless, the MrLucx stood over his claims.

Time will only tell if Hoban leaves Ireland for Paraguay, though it would seem extremely unlikely. Hoban is a proud Galway man with strong links to Loughrea and the hurling club there.
We’ve contacted Hoban’s representatives to see if there’s any truth in this report.
