Meghan Markle has not seen her father-in-law since September 2022 when she traveled to the UK for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. However, it has not gone unnoticed that she selected to include him today as she took to Instagram to celebrate her eighth wedding anniversary.
Across two posts to her 4.5 million followers Meghan reminisced on her 2018 wedding day. The majority of images, all taken by photographer Chris Allerton, were largely only of her and Harry. No other members of the royal family obviously made the cut—apart from the then-Prince Charles.
The image in which Charles appears looks like it was taken just after Harry and Meghan were married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Like almost everyone in the picture, he has his back to the camera, but he is nevertheless clearly recognizable at the forefront of the frame.
The King was Prince of Wales when he stepped in to walk his future daughter-in-law down the aisle after her own father pulled out of the wedding at the last minute due to ill health. And Meghan’s decision to select a photograph of him today could send the message that, despite the Sussexes’ very public feud with the royals, she still thinks of him fondly. Indeed, it has even been interpreted by some as a “subtle olive branch.”
Meghan shared an abundance of pictures and videos today as she and Harry marked their anniversary alongside their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Videos revealed that Harry gave Meghan a gift of a statue of two penguins, which has personal meaning as they dressed up as penguins for their engagement party. They also celebrated with a lemon and elderflower cake, the same flavor of cake they had on their wedding day.
