You might think that an already disqualified driver would try to keep a low profile if they were driving about on our roads.
But that was not the approach of a man with multiple warrants out for his arrest, spotted by Gardai on the Cork-Dublin motorway close to Cahir, cruising along in his big BMW SUV with his phone to his ear.
Officers from Tipperary’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) spotted the driver yesterday and got an ANPR (auto number plate recognition) alert for his vehicle.
When they got to speak to the driver and run some checks, they quickly realised he should not have been on the road – never mind taking calls while doing so.
Posting to social media, Gardai said: “Mobile phone offence which uncovered a disqualified driver wanted on warrants.”
“Tipp RPU patrolling the M8 at Cahir earlier today intercepted a motorist for a Mobile Phone offence and an ANPR alert.
We discovered the driver to be Disqualified from driving and had a number of warrants for arrest. The driver was arrested on scene and is before the courts. Vehicle seized.”
Given the value of the vehicle, it’s likely that an attempt will be made to recover it from the Garda pound, though at significant costs to the registered owner. However, the driver is likely facing a tough day in court, answering to past warrants while possibly racking up a few more convictions.
