Tributes are pouring in for a popular member of An Garda Síochána who passed away recently.

Shane Dawson, who worked at Shannon Garda Station, Co. Clare, has been described as family, friends and colleagues as a “wonderful human being” and “the best friend anyone could have”.

Shane passed away on Sunday May 17, 2026 and his Requiem Mass will take place in Castleconnell, Co. Limerick on Thursday. As news of Shane’s sad passing spread, family, friends and colleagues, both past and present, shared heartfelt tributes online.

“He (Shane) was the best friend that anyone could have , and he had a smile that could light up a room. May his gentle and loving soul rest in the peace and love of Christ,” said one friend, reports the Irish Mirror.

“I was so very sorry to hear of Shane’s untimely passing. It was a pleasure to have met him over the years. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. May Shane’s gentle soul rest in eternal peace and in the arms of all of those who have gone before him,” said a woman from Tralee.

A third friend and colleague said: “My deepest condolences to Shane’s family. I worked with Shane in Shannon for 14 years. Shane was not just a colleague, he was kind, caring, always there to help and give advice.

“Years of chats, be it about his love of cooking or Limerick GAA not to mention politics. Shane was a great friend to me and I’m truly heart broken. Shane will be missed by so many. He will never be forgotten. May your gentle soul rest in peace Shane,” the friend added.

Niall Hodgins, President of the Garda Representative Association (GRA), expressed his own sadness at Shane’s passing: “I was deeply saddened to hear of Shane’s passing, and to Timmy and the extended Dawson family I hope that you can draw some comfort from all the fantastic wonderful memories that I’m sure you each all had of your times with him.”

The popular garda’s death notice on RIP.ie reads: “Shane Dawson, Mountshannon Road, Lisnagry, Co. Limerick. 17th May 2026 suddenly at his home. Member of An Garda Síochána Shannon. Predeceased by his loving father Pat. Sadly missed by his loving mother Kathleen (nee Cosgrave), brother Timmy, sister Syreeta, sister in law Fiona, brother in law Finbar, nephews and nieces Tara, Niamh, Donal and Cian, uncles, aunt, relatives, colleagues and friends.

“Reposing at Meehan’s Funeral Home, Castleconnell (V94 AWT7) on Wednesday 20th May from 6 to 8 p.m. with removal to St. Joseph’s Church, Castleconnell. Requiem Mass on Thursday 21st at 11.30 a.m., which can be viewed on www.castleconnellparish.ie followed by cremation in Shannon Crematorium at 2 p.m. Family flowers only please donations if desired to Pieta House.”
