More than 30 men have been removed from Ireland by the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) as part of an operation targeting people not born here with criminal records during their time in Ireland.
An Garda Siochana has confirmed that EU removal orders were placed on 34 adult males, with exclusion orders issued that will ban them from re-entry into Ireland for up to periods between five and 10 years.
The individuals involved ranged from their mid-20s to mid-60s.
All were removed on a chartered flight that left Dublin early on Sunday, May 24, for Poland before it would travel further to Lithuania.
Those involved comprise 22 Polish nationals and 12 Lithuanian nationals who have a criminal history in Ireland. Each has been convicted before the courts and received custodial sentences for their crimes.
25 individuals had been currently serving prison sentences and were removed directly from Irish Prison Service custody. The remaining nine were arrested and detained, before being lodged in prison prior to their removal today.
The removal of the 34 men, who were all convicted of offences in the State, supports ongoing operations by Gardai nationwide which include the following:
Operation Moonridge – targeting sex offenders, domestic violence offenders, for offences including rape, sexual assault, and possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM)Operation Táirge – targeting recidivist offenders involved in organised retail crime and handling stolen propertyOperation Tara – targeting drug networks involved in sale, supply, importation and cultivation of controlled drugsOperation Thor – targeting organised crime gangs involved in burglary offences nationwideRoad Safety – multiple convictions for road traffic offences including dangerous driving, driving while intoxicated and no insurance
