‘Dramatic rescue’: Three lives saved by Limerick firefighters who entered burning building

TWO MEN and a woman were rescued from a house fire by firefighters who entered a burning building, Limerick Live has learned.

The dramatic rescue took place at St Lelia Place, just off Clare Street in Limerick city. It occurred shortly after 5pm on Sunday afternoon, during the Limerick v Tipperary hurling match.

The occupants of the house were very lucky as by coincidence Limerick Fire and Rescue Service personnel were attending another fire just around the corner in Lock Quay apartments.

A Limerick City and County Council spokesperson said it was a kitchen-related fire that was quickly dealt with.

“There was no reported damage to the apartment and no indications of injuries,” said the spokesperson.

While at the scene in Lock Quay the report of the fire in St Lelia Place came in. Firefighters raced to the scene and gained access to the house despite the flames and billowing smoke.

The council spokesperson said the fire was in a bedroom.

“Crews operated in offensive mode with breathing apparatus. Three persons were reported to have suffered smoke inhalation, and ambulance support was requested and mobilised,” said the council spokesperson.

The two men and a woman were taken to University Hospital Limerick. It is understood that they have not suffered any life threatening injuries from the traumatic experience.

It is not known at this time how either of the fires started.

A large crowd of people watched the dramatic rescue from the nearby park on Clare Street which was thronged on Sunday afternoon due to the fine weather.
