A man has been arrested after the body of a woman was discovered in Co Galway on Thursday morning.
Gardaí attended the scene near an International Protection Accommodation Service (Ipas) centre on Galway Road in Clifden. It is understood the incident did not occur inside the premises.
The body of the woman in her 30s was found in a wooded area near a bridge by the Ipas centre, sources said.
A man in his 30s was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Sources said the man was seen covered in blood and with visible injuries to his neck.
Gardaí said they are following a definite line of inquiry and are not seeking any other person in connection with the incident.
The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination.
It is understood the woman had been living in Clifden before her death and had been working locally.
Both the woman and the arrested man are understood not to have been originally from Ireland. They are believed to be from Iran.
The coroner and State Pathologist have been notified. The woman’s body will be removed from the scene for a autopsy in due course.
The results of the autopsy will help determine the course of the ongoing investigation.
