The Library of Deele College was recently transformed into a vibrant art gallery as the school’s 5LCA (Leaving Certificate Applied) students officially launched their highly anticipated photographic exhibition, “Capturing a Moment in Time.”

The exhibition features the exceptional work of three talented young photographers including Jemma Jordan, Rory Gallagher, and Jack O’Hara.

Working with their art teacher, Ms Patrice Gallagher, the students focused their lenses entirely on the historic town of Raphoe and its picturesque surroundings, managing to freeze-frame the beauty, heritage, and daily life of their local community.

The spark for the exhibition was ignited during a school trip to the Regional Cultural Centre (RCC) in Letterkenny.

It was there that the students viewed a powerful exhibition by acclaimed local photographer Declan Doherty.

Deeply moved by his ability to tell stories through imagery, Jemma, Rory, and Jack returned to Deele College determined to mount an exhibition of their own.

In a fitting full-circle moment, Declan Doherty himself attended the Deele College exhibition as the guest of honouor with Declan expressing his immense pride in the students’ work.

“To see these young people take inspiration from my work and turn it into something so uniquely their own is incredible. They haven’t just taken photos; they have captured the soul of Raphoe.

The exhibition’s title perfectly encapsulates the collection. The trio spent weeks exploring Raphoe, looking at familiar landscapes with fresh eyes.

Jemma Jordan’s work highlights the architectural heritage of the area, bringing out the textures of old stone and the interplay of light in Raphoe’s historic corners.
Rory Gallagher focused on the natural beauty surrounding the town, capturing stunning landscape details that evoke a deep sense of peace and place.
Jack O’Hara’s lens found the vibrant, candid moments of daily life, celebrating the historic buildings of the town and the interplay of shadow on simple objects.

The 5LCA Craft & Design programme encourages practical, hands-on learning, and this project required the students to manage every aspect of the event—from the initial photography concept and editing to framing, curation, and event promotion.

School staff, parents, and fellow students gathered for the launch, with many expressing amazement at the professional quality of the display.

The exhibition stands as a testament to what can be achieved when student talent is nurtured and inspired by the rich cultural community of Donegal. “Capturing a Moment in Time” will remain on display within Deele College, serving as an inspiration for the next wave of creative students.
