ITV Racing Saturday comes from Carlisle, Beverley, and Chester, starting here with a handicap for older horses over 1m3f. This is not a track I enjoy trying to find winners at, and this looks tough to solve. I have to trust his fitness, but I’ll chance DANCING IN PARIS each-way for David Probert and Ian Williams, who is mob-handed. The six-year-old is a decent handicap stayer and ran well at York towards the end of last season when fourth off 1lb higher. Has an each-way chance from a decent draw.
A handicap for older horses over 1m2f. Not a great race. I’ll go with MAFTING, who stayed very well for David O’Meara and ran a good second at Doncaster in May. He was down the field at York last time, but this is much easier, and he really should be in the mix. Might try to make all with stamina assured. Ben Robinson has the mount.
A handicap for older horses over 6f. I’ll risk MISTER SOX each-way here for Sean Kirrane and Tim Easterby. My hope has a Nice draw in stall 6 and a mark of 78 is workable, judged by efforts off 90 last season, including a fine fifth in the Great St Wilfrid. He ran all right in a big field at York last time.
Here’s a conditions race for juvenile fillies over 5f. COSMIC MYSTERY will have to be very good to make a winning debut, but she gets a good draw in stall 2 and goes for a trainer in Archie Watson, who can get one ready. The daughter of Havana Grey cost 220,000gns and might be Royal Ascot material. Paul Mulrennan rides.
Up in class for the Listed Achilles Stakes over 5f. I expect CELANDINE to pick up some pieces here for Ed Walker and Kieran Shoemark. The filly gets a few 1lb for her sex allowance and will enjoy running at a very strong pace, which is assured. She might just run above her likely odds. Have a few quid on each-way in the hope all eight run.
A conditions race for juvenile colts and geldings over 5f. ARAPAHO GOLD made a nice debut for Michael Dods Thirsk when keeping on well to win comfortably. He was inexperienced that day, so he should improve. An each-way chance for Connor Beasley.
Now the Group 3 Lester Piggott Fillies’ Stakes for fillies and mares over 1m3f. ESTRANGE will be all the rage, and as he should win on what we know. David O’Meara’s grey is very classy and last season landed the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks and chased home Kalpana in Group 1 company at Ascot. Hard to beat under Danny Tudhope.
The Silver Bowl Heritage Handicap over 1m. ASTRAZAR is interesting, stepped up to 1m. He can be slow away, which often causes issues, but he does have ability, and last season he got up late at York to win over 7f. If he starts all right and gets a place behind the leaders as he’s dropped in from stall 10, he might cause a bit of a surprise for Ed Walker and Kieran Shoemark. I’ll chance him each-way. Shoemark would not want to be doing 8st 9lb for nothing.
