McDonald’s is planning an upgrade project for one of its busiest Cork restaurants. The fast food giant has submitted a proposal to extend its Kinsale Road location.
The fast food restaurant, located behind the Virgin Media Park stadium, is one of the busiest McDonald’s locations in the city. McDonald’s has sought permission for upgrade works to the drive-thru restaurant, including an extension, a new entrance, and works to the outdoor dining patio area.
The extension will provide a “larger kitchen and dining area, with new entrance lobby,” McDonald’s Restaurants of Ireland Ltd says in documents submitted to Cork City Council.
The restaurant has been open there for a decade, and the designers say the upgrade works will “improve the efficiency and operations of the store.” They say the works will “better align with modern operations, allowing the restaurant to continue to provide improved food and beverage offerings to the surrounding area.”
The City Council will make its decision by July 7.
Across the road, two well-known food and coffee chains are teaming up to open a new double drive-thru. KFC and Costa Coffee have lodged a planning application with Cork City Council seeking to open two new locations along the Kinsale Road.
In November last year, McDonald’s unveiled its new-look Douglas restaurant after a multi-million-euro refurbishment. The fast-food chain invested €3 million at the location, which has been open since 1989. McDonald’s Douglas is very busy, and the drive-thru is the only one in Cork that is open 24/7.
McDonald’s employs over 1,100 people in Co Cork alone.
The chain is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Ireland next year, and has announced a €150m investment, 25 new locations and 1,750 new jobs by 2030.
