A major housing development for a prominent Tallaght site has been approved on appeal.
The plans are for the former Woodies site on Belgard Road, which has been sitting idle for almost two decades after the company relocated in 2009 to nearby Whitestown Way. The development beside the McDonald’s drive-thru and across from The Square, is for 199 apartments, was granted permission on appeal on May 26 by An Coimisiun Pleanala.
The proposal had been met by local opposition, with an appeal on the plans submitted by Tallaght Community Council to ACP. South Dublin County Council originally approved the submission by Midsal Homes Limited on January 21.
Tallaght Community Council has raised issue with the dwelling density on the site, along with its height and a lack of three-bedroom units. They had called for the development to be refused in its current form to align with the Tallaght Town Centre LAP and to prevent “massing” in the area.
But the national planning authority did not agree with the appeal proposal. In its decision to grant permission, ACP found no issue with the proposal as submitted and did not ask for any major amendments to the plans or amendment of the number of units.
The plans for 199 apartments over two blocks of up to seven storeys also include several retail units and an underground car park. Previous approved but expired plans for the site included a cinema and a Leisureplex but those plans never came to fruition after the financial crash and Covid pandemic.
