Award-winning actress Emily Blunt has said she was “starstruck” when she met former US president Barack Obama during his visit to the set of her upcoming film Disclosure Day.

The Devil Wears Prada star, 43, recounted the visit from Mr Obama during filming for Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi thriller, which she stars in as a meteorologist who experiences an alien encounter during a live broadcast.

Speaking to the Press Association at the UK premiere of the film, Blunt said: “Oh, it was awesome.

“I mean, we were all a bit starstruck and standing there with our jaws unhinged, but he was so cool and wonderful.

“I think he’s a big movie fan, so it made it easy to have him around.”

Blunt also praised the upcoming project as “quite exciting”, and credited it for expanding her mindset surrounding the possibility of alien life, extra-terrestrials and the unknown.

She said: “I think it’s actually an exciting invitation to expand yourself past your usual belief systems of anything, whether it’s religion – or whether it’s that you believe in life out there beyond us.”

Blunt stars in the sci-fi film alongside Josh O’Connor – who plays tech whiz Dr Daniel Kellner, who is attempting to expose classified government files about extra-terrestrial life to the public.

The 36-year-old actor also spoke to PA about his “surreal” experience meeting the former president, and said he thinks it happened because Oscar-winner Spielberg is “great friends” with him.

O’Connor said: “We were on set one day, and there was suddenly lots of blacked out vehicles and a helicopter – and then he arrived.

“I didn’t know how.. I think I bowed, which is strange, but there was like a cross between a bow, a handshake, and a curtsy. It was like, really odd.”

The celebrities were joined at the event at Cineworld Leicester Square in London by their co-stars, including Bridget Jones’s Colin Firth, Euphoria star Colman Domingo and US actor Wyatt Russell.
