Two people have been arrested and €50,000 worth of cannabis seized by Gardaí in Cobh this weekend.
A male in his 30s and a female in her 20s were detained on Saturday after a search of a residential property, which turned up the cannabis and a small quantity of cocaine. Utensils associated with the mixing and preparation of drugs were also found at the premises.
The seized substances will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis and investigations are ongoing. Both arrested individuals are currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Garda Station in the Southern Region.
The search was carried out as part of Operation Tara and ongoing investigations targeting the sale and distribution of controlled drugs. Operation Tara is a national anti-drugs strategy, launched by the Garda Commissioner in July 2021.
Earlier this week, in a separate, unrelated case, over €14,000 worth of suspected cannabis and associated products being sold in vape shops were seized by authorities in Munster.
Those drugs were discovered by Tipperary Gardaí during searches of two commercial properties in Roscrea. Among the objects seized by Gardaí were THCA vapes, an assortment of gummies and a number of Cannabidiol (CBD) products.
While CBD is legal in Ireland, it is heavily regulated, with the law requiring that any CBD products being sold here contain less than 0.2% THC – the main psychoactive chemical found in cannabis. Products that do not meet these standards may be seized.
