A popular pub in Galway has secured a new lease of life after two investors from the county purchased it.
P.J. Flaherty’s in Salthill is a well-known establishment in the town and had been put up for sale in recent months.
The pub has been a mainstay of Salthill since 1874 and is a cherished part of the local community.
PJ’s celebrated their 150-year anniversary in October 2024 just as the bar went up for sale, with Colm O’Donnellan of O’Donnellan Joyce organising the sale.

In May 2026, P. J. Flaherty’s, at 82 Salthill Road Lower, found a buyer, with images circulating showing ‘For Sale’ sign now covered with a one indicating the property was sold.
Thankfully, it will remain in Galway hands after two local investors secured its future.
Revealing the exciting news, O’Donnellan & Joyce Auctioneers said: “The sale of P.J. Flaherty’s, one of Salthill’s best-known licensed premises, has successfully closed through Colm O’Donnellan.
An iconic Galway landmark and a cherished part of the Salthill community since 1874, the property has been sold to two Galway investors. Congratulations to all parties involved.”
The pub is comprised of a substantial bar/lounge combined with a large beer garden outside with a smoking area. The pub also houses toilets and a stockroom. It also boasts six one-bed apartments above the pub.
PJs wrote to social media on the occasion of their 150th anniversary in October 2024: “It’s been 150 years since a public house opened here on 82 Lower Salthill Road, back in 1874. Back then, the bar consisted of just the front two rooms of our current pub. PJs are very proud to have been able to be a part of this history.
“150 years with our doors open means 150 years of the soundest heads and the most fantastic characters crossing our doorstep.”
