Mickey Mansell says he is “very proud” after becoming the first player in PDC World Cup history to represent two different nations.
The Tyrone native made his debut for the Republic of Ireland alongside Willie O’Connor on Thursday night as Ireland opened their campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Singapore.
The newly formed pairing saw off a Singapore side featuring darts legend Paul Lim, with Mansell pinning double 10 to secure the winning leg and get Ireland off to the perfect start.
It marked a significant moment in the history of the competition.

Mickey Mansell had previously represented Northern Ireland at the World Cup alongside Brendan Dolan but was eligible to switch to the Republic of Ireland following a change in PDC rules, this meant that he took the spot of Meath man Keane Barry.

Mansell revealed the conversation he had with Barry.
In March the question was asked [by the PDC] would I be interested, or if the opportunity became available to represent Ireland would I accept it?
I’m Irish, I’ve had an Irish passport for 30 years. More than probably any of the other Irish lads who’s come on the tour, before they were even born. The first person I asked was Willie.
If he doesn’t want to play with me and says ‘no I’m not happy’ or whatever the deed is done at that stage. There’s no other conversation.
I phoned Keane, explained to him. I told him the opportunity had come my way. I explained to him my reasons and why I was going to accept it.
I told him I think two weeks before it was announced on social media or through the PDC.
The new regulations mirror those seen in international football, allowing players from the island of Ireland to choose which nation they represent.
Speaking afterwards, Mansell expressed his gratitude for being given that opportunity.
I am very proud.
I have to say fair play to the PDC for giving players like myself the opportunity to have a choice like the footballers.
Now we have a choice for anyone coming through the ranks to have a choice of who they play for, which I think is brilliant.
The opportunity meant Mansell was able to become the first player ever to appear for two different nations at the World Cup.
The change has been one of the more intriguing storylines heading into this year’s tournament, with the experienced thrower opting to join Republic of Ireland number one Willie O’Connor.
Mansell also paid tribute to both his former and current teammates.
I am lucky to have played with Brendan [Dolan].
To play with Willie [O’Connor] is brilliant.
The pairing looked comfortable together in their opening match and will hope to build on that victory as Ireland chase a run in the tournament.
