Sharlene Mawdsley produced a fine run at the Ostrava Golden Spike meeting in Czechia on Tuesday evening to take third in a high quality 400 metres on another mixed night for the Irish.

Mawdsley crossed the line in 50.28 seconds, with World Indoor champion and home favourite Lurdes Gloria Manuel (49.74) taking victory ahead of Cuba’s Roxana Gomez (50.20).

It was a mixed night for the other Irish in action with no podium places but a few quality runs.

Despite breaking the new national record, the Donegal man finished in sixth place, crossing in a time of 2:15.82, just four tenths of a second off third spot.
