There are some social welfare dates and changes to note for the coming months.
These include a payment date change and the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance being issued. Income limits for Carer’s Benefit will also be changed.
Here are the key notices for the coming months:
July
The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance will be paid in July. It provides a once-off, means tested payment to eligible families towards the cost of school clothing and footwear. Following changes introduced in Budget 2026, eligible two and three-year-olds can qualify for the scheme for the first time this year.
The scheme pays €160 for eligible children aged two to 11 and €285 for children aged 12 years and over in second level education. Since June 2025, if you are getting the Foster Care Allowance, you can apply for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance for each foster child. To qualify for the payment, you must satisfy the conditions of the scheme.
Applications for the scheme are now open and the majority of payments will be made in July. Many families automatically qualify for the payment and don’t need to apply.
Also in July, the income limit for Carer’s Benefit will increase by €375 to €1,000 per week.
August
Due to the August Bank Holiday on August 3, social welfare payments due that day will be paid on the prior Friday.
September
The Fuel Allowance season normally begins in late September of each year and ends in April, lasting 28 weeks.
It is worth €38 per week and last season, over 470,000 households benefitted from the scheme. It is expected that the Fuel Allowance will return on Monday, September 21.
